How it works

Weight or measure compares two bases used in some less-than-container-load quotations. One is the shipment’s cubic-meter volume. The other is a weight value divided by the kilogram equivalent specified for the comparison.

The default equivalent is 1,000 kg for planning and is editable. Read the quote or tariff before choosing it: a particular service, charge line or trade can apply another rule.

The larger of the two measures is shown along with the controlling basis. This can help you understand whether additional weight or additional volume is more likely to affect this part of a quotation.

Formula

Planning W/M = max(volume in m³, weight in kg ÷ kg equivalent)

Inputs are normalized before calculation. Results are rounded for display.

Worked example

For 4.032 m³ and 576 kg at a planning equivalent of 1,000 kg, the measures are 4.032 by volume and 0.576 by weight. Planning W/M is 4.032. A 2 m³ shipment weighing 3,000 kg instead produces 3 W/M at that equivalent.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Actual tariffs, minimum charges and forwarder rules vary.
  • Different quote lines can use different charge bases and minimums.
  • Origin, destination, documentation, handling and other fees are not calculated.

Read the calculation disclaimer before relying on an estimate for a shipment.

Frequently asked questions

Does 1 W/M always mean 1,000 kg?

No. The weight equivalent must come from the relevant commercial terms. This tool starts at 1,000 kg as an editable planning assumption.

Can I multiply W/M by a rate to get the final invoice?

That may estimate one rate line if its terms match. It does not include other charges, minimums or different rating bases that can appear in an LCL quotation.

Why is volume controlling for a lightweight shipment?

At the entered equivalent, the numeric cubic-meter measure is greater than the weight measure. The formula selects that larger measure.
