How to Calculate Chargeable Weight

Work through actual versus dimensional weight, identify the controlling measure and understand the limits of a planning result.

Shipping packages arranged for weighing and measurement

Start with the same cargo on both sides

A planning chargeable-weight comparison takes the greater of actual total weight and dimensional total weight. Both values must refer to the same packed cargo and the same quantity.

For identical packages, weigh one packed package or obtain a reliable per-package gross weight. Measure its outside dimensions and confirm the divisor. Then multiply each corresponding per-package weight by the number of packages.

Planning chargeable weight = max(actual total kg, dimensional total kg)

Worked example: dimensional weight controls

A shipment has 48 cartons, each measuring 60 × 40 × 35 cm and weighing 12 kg. Actual total weight is 48 × 12 = 576 kg. Using divisor 6000, dimensional weight is 84,000 ÷ 6000 = 14 kg per carton, or 672 kg in total.

The planning chargeable weight is max(576, 672) = 672 kg. The result states that dimensional weight controls. If you deliberately change the divisor to 5000, dimensional total weight becomes 806.4 kg, which also controls.

Worked example: actual weight controls

Now keep the same dimensions, carton count and divisor 6000, but let each carton weigh 20 kg. Actual total weight becomes 960 kg while dimensional total remains 672 kg. The larger value is 960 kg, so actual weight controls.

A smaller carton will not reduce the controlling value in this example unless the other assumptions also change. Reducing volume can still help a physical loading plan, but it is a separate benefit from this weight comparison.

Why mixed packages need attention

A shipment-wide maximum is not always equal to the sum of package-by-package maxima. Consider one dense package with actual/dimensional weights of 20/5 kg and one bulky package with 5/20 kg. The shipment totals are both 25 kg, but adding the two per-package maxima gives 40 kg.

This difference matters when a service rates individual pieces. The calculator’s identical-carton assumption avoids that mismatch within one calculation. For mixed cargo, apply the provider’s specified method to each piece or group before combining results.

Separate the mathematical comparison from the bill

The selected weight is only one input to a quote. A provider can also apply measurement rounding, billable-weight increments, minimums, oversize rules and charges unrelated to weight. No price is calculated by these tools.

For LCL sea freight, a weight-or-measure comparison can use a different commercial basis. Do not substitute a dimensional-weight result in kilograms for a W/M quantity without checking the terms.

  • Confirm gross versus net weight.
  • Confirm the divisor and units.
  • Confirm per-piece versus shipment-wide comparison.
  • Confirm rounding and minimums with the carrier or forwarder.
